Based on data from the National Cancer Registry Programme (NCRP) indicate that India is expected to see approximately 232,832 new cases of breast cancer in females by the year 2025. This figure highlights a continuing upward trend in the incidence of the disease across the country.
According to reports from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and associated studies, overall cancer cases in India are estimated to rise, with a projected 12.8% increase in 2025 as compared to 2020. Breast cancer remains the leading cancer site among Indian women. In 2020, breast cancer accounted for an estimated 14.8% of all cancers in women, with around 200,000 new cases. The steadily increasing numbers underscore the growing public health challenge posed by breast cancer in India. Experts point to a multitude of contributing factors, including lifestyle changes, hereditary predispositions, rising obesity rates, and environmental influences.
Furthermore, data indicates that a significant portion of breast cancer cases in India are diagnosed at a later stage, which can impact treatment outcomes and survival rates. Challenges in awareness, access to screening facilities, and timely and affordable treatment continue to be areas of concern.
While these figures are projections, they serve as a critical call to action for strengthening prevention strategies, promoting early detection through regular screening and awareness campaigns, and improving access to comprehensive and quality cancer care across India.
